Grove Farm Homestead – This is an eight acre site that was originally a sugar plantation. The workers’ quarters and original family mansion can be viewed. There is also a two hour interesting and informative tour of the plantation.

Kilohana Plantation Estate – This is another historic site which is a sugar plantation mansion that dates back to the 1930s. The buildings are well preserved and the rum tasting makes for a unique experience. The Luau is also great.

Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall – This is best visited when the local Hula Holiday Show takes place, during which a highly entertaining and enjoyable show is put up at the Hall.

Kauai Plantation Railway – The scenic railroad offers group tours and rides that are fun for the entire family, especially for the little ones.

The city of Lihue is filled with a number of shops and boutiques that sell Hawaiian souvenirs and artefacts. Allerton Gardens – Located 3.3 miles from the city centre of Kalaheo, this surprisingly fun place is one not to be missed. The Sunday tours are renowned to be the best. These gardens are home to exotic plants, trees, fruits and flowers. The tour is complete with a trip to the beach. All throughout, the landscape is magnificent in its beauty, which makes for a truly exotic and  typically exquisite Hawaiian experience.

Kauai Coffee Company – The local coffee estate is huge, home to different flavours of coffee. There is an outdoor sampling room, where different kinds of coffee can be tried. The flavours are delicious and fresh, and exquisite varieties such as Blue Mountain and Kona can be sampled. A tour of the plantation can also be taken. There is a small gift shop inside where coffee can be bought at affordable rates. All in all, it is a great place to spend a couple of hours.

National Tropical Botanical Garden – This is a beautiful yet educational place to visit. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kalaheo and is one of five gardens that conduct research for the preservation of endangered plant species. There different tours which are offered, each of them unique in their own way.

Kukuiolono Golf Course – Located 0.4 miles from the city centre of Kalaheo, it is one of the best golf courses in Hawaii, in terms of value for money, service and location. It costs $7 on weekdays and $9 on weekends.

Surfing – Being a coastal town, it comes as no surprise that most residents and tourists are heavily into surfing activities. For beginners who want to learn, there are also surfing schools with excellent teachers.

Snorkelling – There are a number of beautiful snorkelling spots in Kapaa. Gear can be rented at affordable rates.

Water skiing – Water skiing is also a very popular water sport. A large number of beaches are conducive for water skiing.

Horseback riding – Esprit De Corps Riding Academy offers excellent fully guided horseback rides. It is nominally priced and makes for a wonderful laid back experience. The views are truly amazing. You can choose from short and long horseback rides, depending on the time you have and the money you’re willing to spend. Both are guaranteed to be delightful.

Hiking – Sleeping Giant Hiking Trail is an easy trail which can be enjoyed by the whole family. It is a wonderful hike, and provides panoramic views of the valley and the coast.

Places to visit

Nani Moon Mead LLC – Located in Yasuda Centre, these wineries make for wonderful tasting centres. Nominally priced at $5 per tasting, this company is the only producer of tropical honey wines in Hawaii. Hand crafted batches of Hawaiian honey, fruits and spices are also available. The wine tasting hours are from noon till 5PM and it is open from Tuesday to Saturday. The flavours are truly unique and provide a unique insight into Hawaii’s cuisine and culture.

Kauai Aadheenam Hindu Monastery – A popular religious and spiritual site, this monastery is located 3.7 miles from the city centre of Kapaa. Offering a unique spiritual experience, it is definitely a must-see.

Shopping and restaurants

Kapaa is hugely popular for its shopping centres and restaurants. Kinipopo Shopping Village is one of the best places to shop in Kapaa. It has a large number of small shops which sell souvenirs, vintage maps, fine art, handicrafts and Aloha shirts and also authentic Hawaiian clothes and jewellery.  There are also water sports shops which sell everything that you need to rent or purchase for a water adventure. The eateries in this Village are famous for their local cuisine. Wailua Shopping Plaza is home to a number of restaurants specialising in local cuisine, and an eclectic antique shop. The Cononut Marketplace houses a large number of shops where you can find fine artwork, jewellery, Hawaiian mementos, and craft items.
