Kalaheo is not your stereotypical tourist spot, filled with popular tourist sights, museums, and historical landmarks. It is however, an ideal place for a vacation. Located in the southern shore of Kauai, Hawaii, this small but beautiful town provides beauty and experiences like none other. Its breath-taking scenery and calm environment has continuously attracted a steady number of tourists, many of who visit Kalaheo just for the world famous beaches renowned for being largely untouched by commercial tourism. Adventure sports such as snorkelling and water skiing are common activities.

Adventure sports

Snorkelling – Kalaheo’s beaches are untouched and uncharted. They are free from the disturbances a popular snorkelling location generally has and one can enjoy a wonderful and undisturbed snorkelling experience.

Surfing – Although Kalaheo’s beaches might not be home to the greatest or most exhilarating surfs, they make for a wonderful surfing location for amateurs and beginners.

Water skiing – This is a common activity of residents and visitors alike. Water skiing is great fun and a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Sport fishing – Captain Don’s Sport fishing and Ocean adventures is a great way to learn about ocean life. While cruising through the magnificent tropical coast of Kauai, you can catch a variety of fish such as yellowfin tuna, marlin, amber jacks, mahimahi and giant travalie. Catching these amazing fish is truly a wonderful experience, and the rates for fishing trips are quite nominal too!

Kauai ATV tours – This is an all-terrain vehicle tour provided free of cost. This truly “muddy” experience is a lot of fun. It is also a great learning experience as the guides are well informed about the history of the area and local flora and fauna. The views are breath-taking and the tour is complete with a waterfall swim.

Places to visit

Allerton Gardens – Located 3.3 miles from the city centre of Kalaheo, this surprisingly fun place is one not to be missed. The Sunday tours are renowned to be the best. These gardens are home to exotic plants, trees, fruits and flowers. The tour is complete with a trip to the beach. All throughout, the landscape is magnificent in its beauty, which makes for a truly exotic and  typically exquisite Hawaiian experience.

Kauai Coffee Company – The local coffee estate is huge, home to different flavours of coffee. There is an outdoor sampling room, where different kinds of coffee can be tried. The flavours are delicious and fresh, and exquisite varieties such as Blue Mountain and Kona can be sampled. A tour of the plantation can also be taken. There is a small gift shop inside where coffee can be bought at affordable rates. All in all, it is a great place to spend a couple of hours.

National Tropical Botanical Garden – This is a beautiful yet educational place to visit. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kalaheo and is one of five gardens that conduct research for the preservation of endangered plant species. There different tours which are offered, each of them unique in their own way.

Kukuiolono Golf Course – Located 0.4 miles from the city centre of Kalaheo, it is one of the best golf courses in Hawaii, in terms of value for money, service and location. It costs $7 on weekdays and $9 on weekends.

Shopping and restaurants

Kalaheo has a number of small shops that sell souvenirs and handicrafts. Kalaheo Coffee Co. & Café offers delicious local and American cuisine at affordable rates. Kalaheo Steak & Ribs is one of the best steak houses in the town.
