Many Honolulu residents consider Kahala real estate the equivalent of Beverly Hills. With some of the most expensive homes in all of Oahu, the neighborhood is breathtaking. In reality, what else is there to expect? Kahala is sandwiched in between Diamond Head (to the west) and the Waialae Golf Course homes (east) and consists of about 1,200 homes some of which are the most expensive in the entire state of Hawai’i. Additionally, the neighborhood is considered to be one of the flattest in the Honolulu metro area.
As with other nearby neighborhoods, there is a lot to do in and around Kahala. From top notch golf courses to enjoying the beach, it is very uncommon for anyone to utter the words “I’m bored.”
The world famous Waialae Country Club is on the other side of Kealauou Avenue and kind of serves as the eastern border of Kahala. It is a premiere golf course and site of the annual Sony Open tournament, the state’s largest charity golf event that has raised over $16 million dollars for over 350 local not-for-profit organizations since 1999.
Yes – this is Hawai’i and, yes, the beach is always a perk to have at the backdoor, but for many residents, the beaches in Oahu get crowded with so many people visiting. Luckily, Kahala is home to several quiet beach areas that are not as packed as some of the others. Waialae Beach Park, on Kahala Avenue, offers several public beach access points to make it very accessible for anyone who knows it is there to enjoy it.
Early Kahala real estate development began in the 1920’s with a more extensive build-out during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Kahala homes is today a mix of charming older ranch style homes and newer large two story luxury estates.
Just as anyone would expect, living in one of the most exclusive areas of Hawai’i brings with it shopping at one of the most spectacular places to shop – Kahala Mall. This is one of the top places that residents all over the Honolulu Metro area go to shop, eat and do many other things. It is anchored by Whole Foods and features lots of apparel shops, restaurants, health and beauty services and, yes, the Apple Store. Kahala Mall is very popular because of its mix of major retailers and small local boutiques and shops.
On the days when a major shopping extravaganza is on the schedule, Kahala is a short drive from Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu just as Hawaii Kai Town Center and Koko Marina Center are. Each one is about 15 minutes by car.
Even though it is a major tourist draw, Dolphin Quest, located at the Kahala Hotel & Resort, is an awesome adventure where attendees experience swimming with dolphins. And, if that is not enough, luckily, the Kahala Hotel and Resort is right there with one of the most private and tranquil beaches is located.
Elsewhere, in addition to the parks situated throughout Kahala, Diamond Head Crater is short drive (less than 10 minutes) while the beaches and outdoor activities around Koko Marina Center are about 15 minutes away.
The Kahala Mall is filled with small eateries as well as restaurants that many residents enjoy. On top of that, the Kahala Resort features a favorite, Hoku, where many Kahala locals love to have Hawaiian specialties while enjoying the ambiance of the resort. Just as with shopping, it is easy to take the 15-minute drive to any of the surrounding neighborhoods for their local flavors and restaurants.
This neighborhood draws from a group who: A) can afford the home prices here, and B) wants to live in a very quiet neighborhood. Kahala is very popular with executives working in Honolulu as well as celebrities who want to squirrel away and enjoy time out of the spotlight.
Kahala real estate is simply breathtaking. A small stretch of beach along Kahala Avenue features about 40 oceanfront homes while the rest of the neighborhood is home to other gorgeous homes. Even though these may not have the water views, they are still beautiful and make for a wonderful drive through the neighborhood.
One of the biggest perks of living in Kahala is that it has a low density in terms of population and number of homes. There are deed restrictions in place that keep residents (new and current) from obtaining zoning variances to alter their homes a great deal. Additionally, the common areas and private lawns are kept pristine so that the neighborhood truly stands apart from the rest.
List prices in Kahala typically start just over $1 million and can easily top $20 million. The size of home interiors averages around 3,000 square feet. Kahala’s residential properties are always in demand simply because of its elegance, tranquil atmosphere, elite nature of the community and its proximity to the
The style of homes in Kahala vary just as they do in Diamond Head. There are smaller, more unique and characteristically “old style” homes scattered about with more expansive mansions being built to showcase the exclusivity of the neighborhood. The nice thing about Kahala is that the properties are close but not on top of each other giving everyone some privacy.
In Kahala, there are a lot of amenities that make this neighborhood so desirable. The area public schools are rates extremely high and excellent institutions to which area children can attend. Kahala Elementary, on Kilauea Avenue, is one of the area’s top elementary schools and attracts kids from outside the school district because the top notch education that children receive. Kaimuki Middle School and Kalani High School also offer superb education opportunities for middle and high schoolers, respectively.
