Considered a suburb of Honolulu, Aina Haina is often described as a wonderful, family-friendly little town that offers the best of both worlds – the epitome of island living with the conveniences that larger metropolitan areas boast less than 10 miles away. Aina Haina was first established in the early 1940s and continued to develop through the 1950s and 1060s. One of the most cherished qualities is that it is still a small community – unincorporated and quiet. There are 25,000 people living in Aina Haina and most say they lead a nice, simple, and absolutely perfect life.
The Honolulu area is full of small communities that attract residents to live. One of them is Aina Haina. It sits on East Oahu just east of Honolulu surrounded by two ridges -- Waialae Iki and Hawaii Loa Ridge –Even though it is a small community, residents can get what they need within town. The main thoroughfare is Hind Drive which, in effect, loops around the town giving it a very cozy atmosphere.
Many prefer to stay close to home without venturing into other areas which is why Aina Haina is a preferred area. It has everything anyone needs. One the highlights of the town is the Aina Haina Shopping Center located in the heart of the community at the intersection of Kalanianaole Highway and West Hind Drive. The recently remodeled shopping center features one of the nicest Foodland Farms grocery stores (also remodeled) as a base tenant.
Additionally, there are a handful of restaurants, a yoga studio, a surf shop (of course) and more. One of its more popular restaurants is the La Tour Café. The Hawai’i based café is known for their bakery items as well as made to order soups, salads, pizzas and sandwiches; however, their bakery is filled with absolutely delectable items like macaroons and Kouign Amann – maybe the best you’ve ever had.
Aina Haina has three area parks ideal for families. Aina Haina Community Park features tennis, volleyball and basketball courts as well as a playground for kids to play. Not far from Aina Haina is the Maunalua Bay Beach Park in Hawaii Kai. The backdrop is spectacular as it is situated between Koko Crater and Koko Head, the two peaks located east of Maunalua Bay. This gorgeous park is a favorite for locals to paddlers, boaters, kayakers, fishers and picnickers. After all, what else is there to do in a town that butts up to one of the most spectacular bodies of water.
Best of all, anyone who lives in Aina Haina says that they love the location. Not only are they close to the Pacific Ocean, they can go and see so much within a 30-minute drive of Aina Haina. From some of the most amazingly lush and green state and national parks to other area towns and neighborhoods in and around Honolulu, no one should ever say they are bored but rather “it would be nice to stay home this weekend.” Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Diamond Head State Park, and even into some of the cool neighborhoods like Kapahulu and Waikiki are just a few of the top areas to spend a day.
Since Honolulu is so close, it makes it easy to be in the middle of a major city and all it has to offer. The Waikiki Aquarium, USS Arizona Memorial, and the Honolulu Zoo are just a few of the attractions worth making the 30-minute drive.
For entertainment, the Hawai’i Theatre is the only theatre of its kind in Hawai’i and brings world-renowned musical artists to its stage for astounding performances. On the other end of the spectrum, the Diamond Head Theatre is Honolulu’s venue Broadway performances.
Aina Haina, as a suburban Honolulu town, is filled with mostly single family homes big enough for families and even multi-generational families. In terms of the quality of the investment, Aina Haina is perfectly situated between two high-income areas with multimillion-dollar homes yet still offers more affordable beautiful, spacious homes at prices from the mid to upper-$800s to typically about $2 million unless a home along the water becomes available. When this happens, list prices can hit $20 million and feature the most unbelievable views.
Homes sit on fairly large lots – larger than many other areas in all of Oahu. Also, Aina Haina homes feature large living areas as well as spacious bedrooms (three or more) and big kitchens ready for big family gatherings and meals. Hawai’i is all about family which makes Aina Haina that much more attractive.
Views vary depending on where in Aina Haina the home is located. Because the community is situated in valley of sorts, some properties sit higher than others which means they have better views of the water. Still, Aina Haina real estate gives buyers a good deal of house for their investment.
An attribute that is often understated is the fact that Aina Haina is filled with sidewalks throughout all of the neighborhoods. Most people take it for granted but this area is made for walking so having sidewalks makes it that much better not to mention safer.
It is common for people to live in larger areas like Honolulu then decide to move out of the excitement to a smaller, quiet community like Aina Haina. Families, especially, seem to gravitate to Aina Haina. It’s safe and easy for them to maneuver. It is a very close knit community where people know their neighbors and look out for each other.
On top of that, another huge draw to the area are excellent schools in the area – in fact some of the highest rated schools -- Aina Haina Elementary and Holy Nativity (private) are located right in Aina Haina. Middle and high schoolers go to area schools in neighboring communities – Niu Valley Middle School and Kalani High School.
With so much to offer, it is easy to see why Aina Haina is an absolutely lovely place to live for anyone looking in the Honolulu area.
