Situated just east of Downtown Honolulu sits Ala Moana just between Kakaao and Wakiki. It is a cool beachfront neighborhood of condominiums surrounding the world-renowned Ala Moana Center, Ala Moana Hotel and the Hawai’i Convention Center. The neighborhood is bound by the Ala Wai Canal, Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and Ala Moana Beach Park to the south, Piikoi St to the west, Kapiolani Blvd to the north, and the Convention Center to the east. For those who choose to live in Ala Moana, it is totally about the lifestyle. It offers a chic, urban atmosphere combined with the feel of living in a tropical paradise.
For the younger, upwardly mobile crowd, there is simply nothing like living in the Ala Moana neighborhood. It is a community filled with mostly single people with no children working in the professional sector of Honolulu. The people who live here work hard and play hard whether it’s out on the water or on land with the emphasis of being outside. There is so much to see and do almost right around the corner from anywhere in the neighborhood.
Let’s start with shopping at Ala Moana Center. It has the great shops that everyone loves along with fun restaurants and other things to do there; however, the atmosphere is what sets it apart from a lot of other shopping centers. First of all, it is situated in a really cool neighborhood and faces Ala Moana Park. Next, it’s like being in a tropical oasis because of the fact that it is an outdoor shopping center with beautiful and lush exotic landscaping everywhere to create lots of shade.
Just across the street is the Ala Moana Beach Park where you can participate in the ever popular Ala Moana Lawn Bowls on the greens, do stand-up paddleboard yoga, or simply hang out around the beach. The beach area is one of the best in Honolulu or even Oahu. It has something for everyone no matter the age.
Magic Island is truly a magical place to visit. It is situated on the eastern tip of Ala Moana Park and is the place to go for spectacular sunsets or just to savor the fact that Hawai’i is home. Oh, and Magic Island is also THE place to see the July 4th Fireworks.
Kapiolani Boulevard is one of the main thoroughfares running east to west through Ala Moana and its neighbor, Kakaao. It is also filled with shops and restaurants that make Ala Moana so much fun. One of the most popular restaurants is Bread & Butter. It always receives rave reviews and features breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lunch and dinner menus offer an eclectic mix of Spanish and Japanese cuisine along with amazing classic breakfasts with a twist. It is always a favorite of neighborhood residents.
The Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, on the eastern side of Ala Moana, is Hawaii’s largest boat harbor. It is the finishing port of the TransPac Sailing Race that starts in Los Angeles and finishes at Diamond Head. As the yacht basin for two yacht clubs, Ala Wai is a beautiful place. There is nothing quite like watching the sun set behind a yacht basin. It is truly a spectacular site.
Also on the eastern edge of Ala Moana sits the Hawaii Convention Center. This architectural masterpiece is host to many national, international sales meetings and conferences because of all that Ala Moana has to offer.
In Ala Moana, it is all about location. Ala Moana real estate is a hot commodity that moves quickly. The upwardly mobile professionals working in Honolulu want to live in Ala Moana because of having everything at their fingertips and living in such a central location. On top of that, the condominiums boast amazing ocean, mountain and city views that are second to none.
There are not a lot of condominiums in this small neighborhood but units in the ones situated in Ala Moana are highly sought after pieces of real estate. Pricewise, buyers can get into the Ala Moana neighborhood starting in the mid-$100s for a studio at the Ala Moana Hotel or a small one-bedroom unit in one of the older condominiums. The units for sale at the Ala Moana Hotel are excellent rental investment opportunities primarily because of their proximity to the beach and Ala Moana Center not to mention other exciting that vacationers want to see within a short drive.
Of course, the closer the location is to the beach the more expensive the real estate is. Living in a condominium like One Ala Moana, Yacht Harbor Towers with expansive views is truly an experience. On top of these popular residences, new ones are in the works including Park Lane which is slated to be complete in 2017 and Gateway Towers in 2019.
Park Lane is adjacent to the western end of the Ala Moana Center and consists of seven -100-foot buildings with 215 units spread across them and mall parking on the lower floors. The condos are ultra-modern and feature large windows to capture the expansive tropical views. The plan is a graduated completion throughout 2017.
As we have said, Ala Moana is a highly sought after neighborhood in Honolulu. Real estate moves very quickly so it is important to be ready to buy. Even though Ala Moana is an urban community filled with condominiums, it is not completely void of families. Some families choose to stay in a more cosmopolitan area. Area public schools offer high-quality education for all ages. As for private schools, there are many to choose from some of which are located within a short distance of Ala Moana.
The best thing about Ala Moana is that everything is right there. Residents can be in Downtown Honolulu within 15 minutes or less as well as at other Oahu hot spots like Diamond Head in the same amount of time.
There is nothing like living in a very large, metropolitan area that has the feel of living in paradise. Living in Ala Moana is pretty close to perfect.
