The island of Puna is one of the largest districts in Hawaii. With 320,000 acres of land, it is almost equivalent to the land area of Oahu. Puna is located on the east side of Hawaii and shares a border with Hilo. Hilo sits to the north of Puna and Kau is to the west. Puna is home to over 32,000 residents and is characterized by gentle slopes. Puna's landscape is formed from lava and soils from the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanic eruptions. Puna is a relatively new portion of land that is placed upon an extensive network of lava tubes that pass under much of the district. Residents of Puna fall in love with the area's flowing lava fields, unblocked views, and fresh air. Residents of Puna also enjoy the wide-open fields and room for expansion.

A portion of Puna is also home to part of the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park. Other local attractions that can be seen in Puna are the Kalapana Church in Nanawale, Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse, Pahoa Village, the Lava Flow at Kalapana, Kehena Beach, Volcano Art Center, Pohoiki Beach and surf spot. The Lava Tree Park, Champagne Ponds, and the east side lighthouse are also main attractions. Puna also features several international restaurants and is the home of Hawaii's oldest theater. Puna does not have the largest selection of shops and retailers, but Puna residents can visit the nearby city of Hilo, which offers a bigger variety of entertainment and restaurants to enjoy.
