Welcome to Ewa! If you have always wanted to live the island lifestyle, this is a true Hawaiian beach community that is almost void of tourists and vacationers that pack other Oahu beaches. That is why many that live here stay here.
It’s no wonder Ewa is such a great place to live. You have the best of both worlds at your fingertips – you live in a very laid back, beach-y community that is all about the lifestyle, and you’re only a little over 30 minutes to downtown Honolulu if you want a more cosmopolitan excitement and verve.
Ewa sits on the southwest coast of Oahu just west of the Honolulu metro area. It’s a relatively small community with families being the predominant demographic in the area. In fact, it is estimated that over half of the households in Ewa have children under 18 living in them not to mention almost two-thirds of the households are married couples.
Living in Ewa is all about being outside whether it’s playing golf at one of the area’s phenomenal golf courses (and there are several from which to choose) or simply enjoying time with friends and family at one of our area parks or beaches. And, since the weather is pretty much perfect all year long, there is no excuse to stay indoors.
First of all, let’s talk golf. Ewa is home to several golf courses (who wouldn’t want to play golf in Hawai’i?) including private courses like the Hokalei Country Club, semi-private courses such as Ewa Beach Golf Club, and public courses. At the upper end of the spectrum is the Hawai’i Prince Golf Club -- part of the Hawai’i Prince Hotel Wakiki and features a TPC Arnold Palmer designed course.
On top of the golf, Ewa residents have the beach at their back door making it natural to spend a lot of spare time at the beach. White Plains Beach is probably one of the best spots to spend a day on the beach. People love to go there to surf (especially if they are new to the activity), play in the water or just lie on the beach. There are equipment rentals all around as well so no need to drag everything out only to drag it all home at the end of the day.
There are several parks along the waterfront where people can spend time on the beach. One is Iroquois Beach. It features a nice stretch of beach along the eastern corner of Ewa and is a quiet, family oriented area where kids can run and play. Depending on the day, it is quite possible to watch planes take off and land as the Honolulu airport is just across the Bay from Iroquois Park. Ewa Beach Park is situated right in the heart of Ewa Beach community and is a nice area to play on the beach but there are rocks and reefs so playing in the water can get a little dicey especially barefooted. Kayaks and canoes are often seen out in the waters off Ewa Beach Park.
Everyone loves a good farmers market and living in Hawai’i means that fresh produce is always abundant. In Ewa, the Mahiku Farmers Market is open every Wednesday from 3-7pm at Pu’uola Iroquois Point as well as other locations throughout the week.
Laulani Village Shopping Center is situated in the heart of Ewa. It has everything in it from Starbuck’s to Safeway to Petco and other retailers including clothing, restaurants, and more. The shopping center is less than five years old so it is still growing and new to the residents of Ewa.
One of the best qualities of Ewa is the fact that real estate in this quaint Honolulu suburb is much more affordable than other area communities. The top thing many people say about Ewa real estate is that buyers get a lot of home for their investment when comparing it to other Honolulu communities.
The community features primarily single-family homes (no wonder it’s such a family friendly town) with a combination of homes built just after WWII, in the 1960-70s and the 1990s. On top of that, over the past few years, new, planned developments have begun to spring up with newly constructed homes that feature more modern, updated amenities. Most homes in Ewa are have spacious homes with lots of room to move and multiple bedrooms and baths to accommodate large families. The neighborhoods are well kept and very pristine to showcase the lush tropical landscape throughout the community.
Pricewise, homes start in the mid to upper-$400s for older homes that require some renovations and top the $1 million mark for homes situated on are very close to one of the area golf courses. Some of the most popular communities include Ocean Pointe, Ewa Gentry (which encompasses several smaller neighborhoods) and Hoakalei.
Families tend to move to Ewa from larger, more metropolitan communities closer to Honolulu. In Ewa, they can stretch out and live in an area where they know their neighbors which makes it ideal for kids. Everything is close so it is easy to get from one place to another. There are always community events taking place that bring everyone together like the Saturday Swap Meets and Movies in the Park at Gentry Park.
There are several schools located in and around Ewa including Holomua, Ewa Beach, Iroquois Point and Pohakea Elementary Schools. Ewa Makai Middle and James Campbell High Schools complete the area public schools. All of the schools have good reputations and offer quality education to kids living in Ewa. There are also several excellent private schools in the Ewa communities including Friendship Christian School which offers school for PK through 12th grade; Lanakila Baptist Schools for middle and high school; and, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, PK through 9th grade.
One thing for sure is that if you want to escape the traffic and all that comes with living in a major metro area, Ewa is a good place to consider. With affordable real estate and a family atmosphere, it is definitely a nice area to call home.
