Lihue is one of the most important cities on the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. It serves as a connecting point of all the small towns in the island to the outside world. It is also, however, an extremely popular tourist spot with a number of great sights and activities to enjoy. The residents and tourists engage in a number of water sports and adventure activities. There are a lot of places to visit and tours that can be taken. The city also has a very active night life, with dinner theatres and movie theatres. There are also a number of speciality shops providing items related to the culture and life of Lihue and Hawaii.
Scuba diving – In close proximity to Lihue are a great number of pristine and secluded beaches which are excellent scuba diving spots. The city is filled with shops that provide diving gear for rent at nominal rates. For inexperienced divers, experienced and well trained guides can also be hired.
Snorkelling – Snorkelling is a popular activity in Lihue. It does not need the expertise that scuba diving requires. The beaches near Lihue are home to a number of popular snorkelling spots.
Water skiing – Both residents and tourists engage in this fun and exhilarating activity. Almost every beach has shops that rent gear and equipment at reasonable rates.
Places to visit
Kalapaki Beach – Kalpaki Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and opens up to the Hoary Head Mountains and Nawilwili Bay. There are a number of beachfront restaurants and shops. You can also engage in water sports such as surfing and swimming.
Wailua falls – This is a truly beautiful spot located about 3 miles from the city centre of Lihue. Although it can be viewed only from the end of a long winding road, the view is amazing. There are also a couple of hiking trails for people who want to hike up to the falls.
Smith Family Luau – The grounds are amazing and so is the food. There is also an open bar. This dinner theatre also provides quality entertainment and is an ideal place to visit if you’re looking for family fun. Highly recommended for first time Luau visitors.
Grove Farm Homestead – This is an eight acre site that was originally a sugar plantation. The workers’ quarters and original family mansion can be viewed. There is also a two hour interesting and informative tour of the plantation.
Kilohana Plantation Estate – This is another historic site which is a sugar plantation mansion that dates back to the 1930s. The buildings are well preserved and the rum tasting makes for a unique experience. The Luau is also great.
Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall – This is best visited when the local Hula Holiday Show takes place, during which a highly entertaining and enjoyable show is put up at the Hall.
Kauai Plantation Railway – The scenic railroad offers group tours and rides that are fun for the entire family, especially for the little ones.
Shopping and restaurants
The city of Lihue is filled with a number of shops and boutiques that sell Hawaiian souvenirs and artefacts. Kapaia Stitchery is set of speciality shops that sell souvenirs and have a beautiful array of kits and fabric. The quilts are especially unique and affordable too. The Koa Store is one of the best places to buy authentic items made of Koa wood. There are a number of beachfront and city restaurants that specialise in local cuisine and must be visited to complete your Hawaiian experience.
